James Tupper Stops Trash-Talking “Grey's” and Joins Cast

What a difference a half year makes. In January, James Tupper talked up his medical series "Mercy" to PopcornBiz and managed to give some good digs to the medical drama competition "Grey's Anatomy."

Fast forward to last week: "Mercy" is no more while Tupper has joined the cast of "Grey's Anatomy."

In the medical actor version of going to the mighty New York Yankees, EW.com reports that Tupper has checked into the TV hospital institution. He'll play a trauma counselor brought in following last season's hostage crisis for at least two episodes.

In case Tupper forgot some of his playful bon mots against what was then the competition, it's our civic duty to remind him. First up was the syrupy pathos on the show.

"They are so serious," Tupper said of 'Grey's' at the time. "Every single scene there's a sad song in the background."

And then there was the comparison with the gritty "Mercy," which was shot in an actual former hospital in New Jersey.  "Grey's" only pretends to be Seattle's Grace-Mercy West Hospital

"They shoot in in Los Angeles at a backlot in Hollywood. It's not Seattle," said Tupper. "The wettest they get is taking a hot shower at the end of the evening or getting into their jacuzzi."

He was on a roll. But he was trying to push a gritty-upstart in the face of "Grey's" dominance. "Mercy" lost out and was canceled earlier this year after it failed to find its audience.

The other bit of irony is that Tupper's big break in "Men In Trees" came along with the initial burst of  "Grey's" mania. And while there was a McSteamy and a McDreamy on "Grey's," Tupper was marketed for "Men In Trees" as Mc-Treemy.
