“Freakonomics” Closing the Tribeca Film Festival

"Freakonomics," based on the book of the same name and co-directed by five documentarians, including an Oscar winner and a few nominees, has been chosen to close this year's Tribeca Film Festival at a gala screening on April 30.

Exploring subjects ranging "from corruption in the sumo wrestling world to the minefield of ethnicity and class conflict in the million-dollar industry of baby naming," the film will have its world premiere.

Oscar winner Alex Gibney, nominees Morgan Spurlock, Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing, and Eugene Jarecki and Seth Gordon, joined forces to direct five segments of the film based on the groundbreaking bestseller by Stephen Dubner and Steven Levitt. The pair now edit a blog of the same name hosted by The New York Times.

Gibney won an Oscar in 2008 for his film "Taxi to the Dark Side," which told the true story of an Afghan cab driver who was tortured and killed while in U.S. custody.

Spurlock rocketed to fame in 2004 with "Super-size Me," which tracked his body's health as he went on an all-fast food diet for 30 days.

Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady were nominated for an Oscar for "Jesus Camp," about kids who spend their summer learning about, well, Jesus. She also unveiled "12th & Delaware," a look at the battle over abortion rights, at this year's Sundance.

Seth Gordon first rose to notoriety with "King of Kong," about the quest for the highest Donkey Kong score of all-time, and has since directed episodes of "Community," "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation."

Eugene Jarecki is best known for "The Trials of Henry Kissinger," based on the book by Christopher Hitchens that lays out the case for bringing the Nobel Peace Prize winner up for war crimes.
