2011: The Year of the Sequel

New movies need not apply.

Now that most of the release date dust has settled, it's official: This year, movie theaters will be crammed with a record-setting total of 27 sequels. What's more, 2011 will also see the most "Part 4s" in history with a whopping 5.

Helping to usher in this Age of Recycling are the likes of "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," "Scream 4," "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn," "The Hangover Part 2," "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," "Fast Five," "X-Men: First Class," "Sherlock Holmes 2," "Piranha 3DD" (not a joke), and "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol."

The 27 sequels beat the previous record of 23 held by the year 2003 (which is fitting).

Box Office Mojo has the complete breakdown of just how unimaginative Hollywood has become. And here's an even more depressing thought: This list doesn't even count "reboots." Sigh.
