Dramatic Room Makeovers Revealed

Don Freeman

Even the worst decorating disasters can be redeemed with a bit of vision and creativity. House Beautiful gathered together five jaw-dropping room makeovers, where the interiors go from bleak or bland to beguiling. Here are two of our favorites: Designer Celerie Kemble turned his under-construction section of a Manhattan condo into an elegant dining nook (see below) with a mohair-upholstered banquette, David Sutherland pedestal table and chairs from Nancy Corzine. For a lackluster media room (shown below), designer Marshall Watson transformed the space by using a citrus-y color scheme, adding a semi-circular sofa to contrast what he called the room's “soaring angles” and opting for white brick instead of traditional red.
