Producer Scouts: West Village Favorites

Christopher Street was probably one of the greatest blocks I ever lived, despite minor details like the size of my room (I had a futon for a bed... the room's only sleep solution). For me, forfeiting size was well worth living amongst the energy, liveliness, and often bizarre sights of the street below my fourth-floor walkup.

All New Yorkers know far too well that this city changes in a minute. Five years later, my West Village digs are no longer lined with the signature neighborhood swag of local coffee brewers and quirky sex shops. But in some weird fate and luck for my palette, three of my very favorite restaurants survived and still hold their Christopher Street digs.

Nearly any dish is delicious at this Thai joint, but the dish that's always a crowd favorite is "The Basil." Choose your choice of chicken, steak, shrimp, or tofu and hot or medium spice. Their summer Strawberry Mojito cocktail is also incredibly refreshing.

Housemade noodles are as rich as their sauce-y counterparts, and recently, the parpadelle special with mushrooms, truffle oil, and white wine sauce had my whole table licking the bowl clean.

I love the Calamares appetizer--fresh baby calamari grilled with garlic and lemon olive oil on top of arugula. Any meat entree is delicious and I can still taste the side of plantains from my first visit. Top it with some house sangria. Cheers!

Even after years of tasting the best food this country has to offer, there's really nothing like "home" cooking.
