Fish (& Chips) Out of Water? Brits, We're Here to Help

Being abroad is a wonderful thing. Few experiences add perspective to a world view like being a fish out of water on the other side of the pond. The foreign foods, the culture, the depressing exchange rates, they all lend to the broadening of your cultural palette.

However, these things can also make you pretty homesick. So, if you're a traveling Brit who needs to be reminded of home, try one of these local spots across our fair nation.

CHICAGO

1934 W Irving Park Rd / North Center
773-871-3757
We call it soccer, but to the rest of the world, there's no greater sport than the game of football. And besides being the world's most popular sport, it may also have the most loyal fan base. For the traveling Brit who needs a watering hole to get their footie fix, hit up Chicago's Globe Pub. With an extensive menu of beers (or Irish coffee, soccer does air pretty early here in the states), you can watch all your Premier League games right in the heart of the Windy City.

LOS ANGELES

28014 South Montereina Dr / Rancho Palos Verdes
714-293-9121
You think you're tough? You go to the gym twice a week and do a little cardio? You can do 15 sit-ups before you get cramps and reward yourself with a sub sandwich? Newsflash, Mr. Universe, you ain't tough until you've played Rugby. Basically football (that's U.S. football) without any of the protective padding, this Eurosport can wither even the sturdiest of men. However, if you're up to the challenge and can hang with our British brothers, you'll be hard pressed to find a better time.

1403 2nd St / Santa Monica
310-451-4107
Would you prefer a good cup o' tea over a low-calorie smoothie? Well, if you're stranded on Santa Monica, there's only one refuge for you. At the Tudor House, touting the title of the "British center of Southern California," this restaurant and tearoom has become an institution since its opening in 1962. However, don't wait, as the Tudor will be closing its doors soon for the last time.

7519 Melrose Ave / West Hollywood
213-748-5498
At the "crossroads of fashion, rock and roll, and all things English", you'll find English Laundry. Designed by Christopher Wicks, you'll look like you just stepped off the corner of Abbey Road with these classically inspired clothes.

PHILADELPHIA

400 South 2nd Street / Social Hill
215-922-1790
As anyone who remembers Oliver Twist's pickpocket friend can attest, the Artful Dodger can be a lonely guy's best friend. Nestled in Headhouse Square in the city of brotherly love, this pub is serving authentic pints (20 oz., notch) as well as classic pub food like shepherd's pie. However, while they have drink, food, and good times in abundance, they're lacking in party tools (make sure to bring your own darts).
