Four young San Diegans handpicked from the social registries of the world  were among the 47 women who shined at the 54th International Debutante Ball at New York's Waldorf-Astoria

"The very grand ballroom at the Waldorf Astoria was filled with pretty young things, their mothers, fathers, siblings and family friends--more than 660 of them,"  wrote society columnist Burl Stiff in the San Diego Union-Tribune

Rancho Santa Fe residents Elizabeth Irvine Huntley Penniman, and Chanelle Nicole Herring and Jennifer Lynn Herring, and Elizabeth Amanda Richardson  of La Jolla attended the ball.

The debutantes represented England, Austria, Africa, Hong Kong, France, Germany, Scotland, and Yugoslavia, as well as 11U.S. states. The debutantes' families paid $14,000 for a table at the ball, as well as thousands of dollars for couture gowns, hairdressers and related expenses, according to the Washington Post, which posted a gallery of scenes from the spectacular event.

  • Drea Tuesday, Jan 6 at 11:52 PM FLAG COMMENT Just what we needed to hear about when most of us are stuggling to keep roofs over our heads...I am amazed that in times like this the media wants to "report" on something so lavish and just plain useless...GREAT JOB NBC 7/39... :)
  • cookiemom Tuesday, Jan 6 at 8:34 PM FLAG COMMENT Must be nice, I hope when those brats get out on their own they don't go hungry. Life is ready for them. But are they ready for life? Brats like those make me sick..... Let's try sharing some of that to the poor who had no Christmas presents.....
  • Cyber Joe Tuesday, Jan 6 at 2:57 PM FLAG COMMENT These people are immune to recessions. They derive their wealth from the unfortunate masses and they just bought you for even reporting this rediculous event. Repost - Site doesn't seem to be working.
  • Peggy Tuesday, Jan 6 at 12:51 PM FLAG COMMENT Well, I hope these young ladies and their families are impressed with themselves. What a shallow claim to fame. What have any of them accomplished by this? Nothing. They still squat behind two shoes, like everyone else.
  • Gail Tuesday, Jan 6 at 12:22 PM FLAG COMMENT Why can't that kind of money be used for the homeless, or for the Humane Society. Selfishness and greed; that's all this is.
