For the past 14 years hairstylist Doug Yeagley's love of the 'cinema' has been the driving force behind his boutique outdoor theater in Mission Hills called "Cinema Under The Stars." The sell-out crowds are enchanted by sound of the the 40-inch gong that resonates at the opening of every movie showing.   But Yeagley says the city of San Diego required him to bring the outdoor patio where he had been showing his movie classics, up to code.

So Yeagley is holding an 'open house/fundraiser'  June 11, to help defray some of the costs of fixing-up the theater before it's official season opener on June 18 when the movie feature will be "Roman Holiday" with Audrey Hepburn.

But the June 11 event will feature a "Taste of Mission Hills."  For $20 per person there will be samplings from three local restaurants including Olivetto Cafe and Wine Bar, The Gathering and Lefty's Pizzeria. There will also be prizes including concert tickets and Padres tickets.

"Cinema Under The Stars" is a boutique theater because it offers a unique alternative to movie going. There are only 60 seats. But speaking of seats, check out the zero gravity recliners so theater goers to put their feet up. There are also cabanas. "It's a chance to get people together, to become an audience," says Yeagley. " We want it to be entertaining, it becomes an experience."

Yeagley originally came up with the idea years ago when he wanted to 'branch out' from his hairstyling business and do something involving the arts community. He says the idea of films outdoors in his patio area was just the right combination.

This year's  movie schedule lists American classics from the 30's to new classics. Among the films on the program this year are Hitchcock's Marnie, Blade Runner, Barbarella, The Big Chill.

The improvements in the electrical system will allow Yeagley to change the mood of the theater through lighting. There's a new sound system to accompany the hi-definition projection.
