The restaurant got its start 57 years ago in Mission Hills.

A San Diego restaurant institution closed its doors this weekend.

The owner of Nicolosi's Italian Restaurant in Del Cerro said he was forced to shut down because of the sour economy.

"We would like to thank all our families, friends and our extended families (our customers) for all your loyalty and support throughout the years," the Nicolosi family and staff wrote on their Web site.

It seems likely that most of San Diego stopped by one last time before the restaurant closed. People waited in line for more than two hours this weekend to get a table and a last visit at an eatery that had a family touch.

Nicolosi's opened in Mission Hills in 1952, then moved to Normal Heights the next year, ending up in Del Cerro on Adobe Falls Road in 1992.
