The 5th Annual San Diego Race for Autism brings out nearly 4,000 people in support of local families, programs and schools.

The event featured a 5K race, a one-mile fun walk and a free resource fair.

It's not too late to send in donations; you can send in contributions until April 11. All proceeds stay local.

"The money that's raised goes toward grant funds, helping support teachers in the classroom and supporting researchers who are interested in learning about how autism affects the family and how we can help the children and families," said NFAR spokeswoman Carol Stachwick. "It's a big fight, there's a lot of things to consider. The nice thing is that people are become more aware and really understanding, which gives us more chances to be successful."

The National Foundation for Autism Research (NFAR) also partnered with more than 30 other organizations including Rady Children's Hospital, SDSU and UCSD to provide a free informative resource fair.

And as for the race itself, participants were happy to show their support.

"It was very good. It was exciting to finish and just be together," said two ladies who ran the race together.
