Four young San Diegans handpicked from the social registries of the world were among the 47 women who shined at the 54th International Debutante Ball at New York's Waldorf-Astoria.
"The very grand ballroom at the Waldorf Astoria was filled with pretty young things, their mothers, fathers, siblings and family friends--more than 660 of them," wrote society columnist Burl Stiff in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Rancho Santa Fe residents Elizabeth Irvine Huntley Penniman, and Chanelle Nicole Herring and Jennifer Lynn Herring, and Elizabeth Amanda Richardson of La Jolla attended the ball.
The debutantes represented England, Austria, Africa, Hong Kong, France, Germany, Scotland, and Yugoslavia, as well as 11U.S. states. The debutantes' families paid $14,000 for a table at the ball, as well as thousands of dollars for couture gowns, hairdressers and related expenses, according to the Washington Post, which posted a gallery of scenes from the spectacular event.
